Butterfinger Kisses from Mama By Zaundra Mapp

Walking on the bridge she would make sure I was safe. Knowing I was terrified of water and bridges. She would always hold my hand. I can remember us walking everywhere as a little girl. We did not yet have a car. It was nice walking alongside my beautiful mother. We would pass familiar faces and say hello and I can remember this tan jacket my mom used to wear.

I remember walking so many places with my mother thinking that she was a hero. She was absolutely fearless and independent.

She was always so beautiful and classy. Things were not always easy you see Granny Stella passed away when I was 4 years old my mama’s precious mother. Mama was so close to her and we were then alone. I watched my mama struggle to take care of me. She was grieving and just trying to take things day by day. She would walk me to daycare so she could go to work and I can remember being so excited when she would come pick me up.

Mama even used to take me to work with her a lot of times as a little girl. She’d let me go in the supply room and get extra notebooks and pens to draw with. I’ve always loved writing and drawing.

I remember each day we would walk to this little corner store and she would let me grab a butterfinger chocolate bar. I remember walking in the store seeing that bright yellow wrapper she would let me grab the bar off the shelf and she would pay for it, she would open it for me and I would snack on it during our walk home. I can remember little short cuts and alley ways we'd take to get home. Eating Budget brand lunch meat sandwiches for dinner. Sometimes we would order dominos pizza and mama would let me drink Pepsi soda drink and loved pizza night!

She also made the best hamburgers and we’d pair those with Jay’s potato chips while watching Star Search. 💕

Mama could make sunshine even if she was in a hard stormy season. I always admired her because she was so strong. No matter what she was going through she always stayed strong.

I remember the echo in the church as a alittle girl. In this almost empty church with just a few choir members practicing for Sunday’s church services. Mama sang lead all the time and I can remember enjoying listening to her and all the songs they would sing. They have stayed with me even after all these years. I remember each one. Mama tought me that church was important even as a small girl.

No matter the season mama always made sure I had everything I needed and gave me so much love and care. There is nothing like a love of a mother. Soft, nurturing and gentle. Always willing to go the extra mile to assure her kids are safe, happy and secure. As my mama is aging I like to remind myself of all the sacrifices she has made for me. I will always cherish her and do my best to take care of her.

I would not be the mother I am today had I not had an example like my mama. She was teaching me things just in her walk and how she handled things. I was always watching her. When life got hard for me being a single mom myself I would remember things my mama would do and I’d do the same. She would spend her last money so we could eat while she wouldn’t eat anything. She would wear the same clothes over and over again so we could have something new.

Any bully’s at school that tried to start trouble with us she was at the school front and center. Even in my adult days she’s always been willing to do what she can to keep me safe and protected. I watched my mama struggle growing up but she went on to be a teacher for almost 30 years leaving teaching and guidance on so many children. Everyone loves my mama. I can remember her taking myself and my brothers with her to the local college while she finished her masters degree. She was so brave.

She kept us always in church and always tried her best to give us the life we deserved. She didn’t have life easy growing up but she made the best of it.

Looking at my mom now amazes me. She is full of energy and always there for my brothers and I. Our kids and her friends and family. Even though she may not move around as fast as she used too. She moves with love, compassion, care, and so much more. I love you mama and I’m so blessed to have you in my life. The world should know.

Some days I will have a special treat of a butterfinger chocolate bar to remember those times we had when I was a little girl. It brings back memories of so much.

May the Lord give you an abundance of blessings. You deserve the world.

Love ❤️

Zaundra
